Scoots asks a great question

about the middle class and its relation to the poor.

I also think it is important for we middle-classers not to go into these situations expecting that we are the ones that will do the teaching/fixing. I believe that being poor, (while sometimes it leaves one unable to pay for food or medicine) in general, is not a personality problem to be fixed. I think we middle-classers can learn a lot from those who have less money.

While we have the best of intentions, when we do work on helping the poor it comes out as helping the poor to not be poor. This means we want them to be just a little more like those of us with money. Maybe instead, we should be a little more like the poor, learning to do without, and learning those things they have to teach us about community, family and contentment.
